Martin Luther nailed the famous 95 theses on the Wittenberg Castle church door on October 31, 1517. This event touched off the reformation which lead to the preservation of the Christian faith. Many years of fighting and turmoil within the Holy Roman Empire ensued. The emperor, Charles V, sought to establish unity within the empire and as a result, there were meetings convened over the years to discuss the different theological viewpoints.

On June 25, 1530, one such meeting was convened. Emperor Charles V was present and on behalf of the Lutheran Church, Philipp Melanchthon presented a confession of the Christian faith. This occurred in Augsburg, Germany and thus the confession has been known as the Augsburg Confession. One of the finest confessions of the Christian faith ever written, the Augsburg Confession consists of 28 articles and addresses the issues that caused division within the church at that time. To this day, confessional Lutheran churches subscribe to the Augsburg Confession because it is a faithful exposition of the scripture.

We commemorated this momentous occasion on Saturday, June 25, with a brief overview of the Augsburg Confession and we will continue the discussion on July 23.
